Lucasfilm's KATHLEEN KENNEDY and FRANK MARSHALL Receives Top ACADEMY AWARDS Producing Honor

John Bailey, the newly re-elected president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, said in an email to members on August 8 that the board of governors met to approve three major changes; a new category to honour popular films, promising a brisk three-hour ceremony and a much earlier air date in 2020.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced its "popular" Oscar category "merits further study" and will not present the new category at the upcoming 91st Academy Awards.

This post has been updated with more background on the Academy Awards.

"There has been a wide range of reactions to the introduction of a new award, and we recognize the need for further discussion with our members", the academy's CEO, Dawn Hudson, said in a statement. Additionally, Marshall received a Best Picture nomination for Raiders of the Lost Ark, while Kennedy was nominated in the same category for E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial War Horse, and Lincoln.

It also added that its board of governors would continue to discuss the matter, and will "examine and seek additional input regarding this category".

Pompeo says did not author New York Times ‘resistance’ column
Coats, meanwhile, released a statement that said speculation that the op-ed was written by him or his principal deputy, Susan M. Some of the guessing game over the authorship centred on whether the author worked in the White House or a federal agency.

Changes to the 91st Oscars (2019) include restructuring and shortening the length of the telecast to three hours. To that end, select categories among the 24 typically presented on-air will instead be awarded during commercial breaks, with those winning moments getting edited down for air later in the broadcast.

They'd also previously announced that the 2020 Oscars would be moving up a couple weeks.

Starting in 2020, the Scientific and Technical Awards will move to June, as the technologies honored do not represent achievements within a specific awards year.

The 91st annual Oscars will be held February 24 in Los Angeles. This story was made possible by generous people like you. And now that LAist is part of KPCC, we rely on that support. Help us help you live your best life in Southern California.
