Eight of the 47 passengers and crew on board the Air Niugini plane which crashed into a lagoon in the Federated States of Micronesia have been injured.

This picture taken by James Yaingeluo on September 28, 2018 shows locals approaching to rescue passengers of the crashed Air Niugini aircraft on the remote Island of Weno, in Micronesia.

The Air Niugini Boeing 737-800 aircraft carrying 47 people - 35 passengers and 12 crew members - plunged into the water after it "landed short of the runway", at the global airport on Weno, the main island of Chuuk state in Micronesia on Friday, according to a statement from Air Niugini, the national carrier of Papua New Guinea.

"At this point, it is still unclear whether the aircraft overshot the end of the runway or ditched in the lagoon before reaching the runway", JACDEC said.

Remarkably, it reported no serious injuries among those on the plane, which was making a scheduled stop on its way from the Micronesian capital Pohnpei to Port Moresby.

"Air Niugini can confirm that all on board were able to safely evacuate the aircraft".

The airline did not immediately respond to requests for more details about the passenger, such as his age or nationality.

The airline said it had received reports that "the weather was very poor with heavy rain and reduced visibility at the time of incident".

Passenger Bill Jaynes said the plane came in very low.

Nintendo also claimed that MariCar was using Nintendo costumes for publicity and sales without the publisher's permission.

"It was surreal", he told Bible Baptist Radio Chuuk shortly after being discharged from hospital with a gash on his forehead.

"I thought we landed hard until I looked over and saw a hole in the side of the plane and water was coming in", he said, "and I thought, well, this is not, like, the way it's supposed to happen".

Jaynes praised the response of the locals. "They just jumped in their boats and started helping".

"It's really fortunate that we didn't have any fatalities", said Glenn Harris, a government aviation security inspector for the Federated States of Micronesia.

The runway, like others in the north Pacific, is relatively short at 1,831 meters (6,006 feet).

Chuuk Lagoon is a popular diving destination and the site of sunken Japanese ships that were bombed by the US military during World War II.

The country and the airline's profiles are likely to rise because Papua New Guinea is hosting world leaders in November for an annual meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

Air Niugini is Papua New Guinea's national carrier.

The 13-year-old aircraft's wing was reportedly damaged in May, when another aircraft that was taxiing at Jacksons International Airport in Port Moresby hit it while it was parked and unoccupied. He said an investigative team would be on the ground in Chuuk by Saturday to figure out what went wrong.
