Qantas reveals location of first pilot training academy

Toowoomba will be the first regional centre to host a Qantas training school

With estimates some 790,000 new pilots will be required over the next 20 years, more than a third in Asia Pacific, Joyce is confident the two Qantas Pilot Academies eventually will become a huge commercial success.

Busselton in WA's South West, Alice Springs, Bendigo, Dubbo, Launceston, Mackay, Tamworth and Wagga Wagga are under consideration for the second academy site, with a decision due by the end of the year.

Those criteria included access to uncongested airspace, a high proportion of clear weather days per year, access to support infrastructure and ability to attract students and trainers to live in the area.

The school will not be limited to future Qantas pilots; it could also train other domestic students and global students that will fly with foreign airlines.

A Qantas plan arrives ahead of the announcement of the pilot training academy.

Toowoomba was one of nine regions short-listed for the facility, which will train up to 250 pilots a year.

"In partnership with the Queensland government and the Wagner Corporation, who own the airport, we'll build state-of-the-art training facilities and student accommodation".

"Toowoomba will be an unbelievable place to learn to fly".

"Qantas has a well-earned reputation of having some of the world's best pilots".

Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce confirmed the family had contributed a "significant amount" of money towards the project. "What we're ultimately creating is a world-class pilot school for students from Australia and around the globe", Joyce added.

Joyce said that addressing the gender imbalance in pilots - just 3% globally are now women - will be a key focus in the Qantas program, with 16% of registered applicants women.

Australia's Qantas Airways Ltd on Thursday said it would open a flight school for up to 250 pilots a year at a regional airport in Queensland to ease a pilot shortage, using US -based L3 Technologies Inc as the training provider.

Construction will begin next month at Wellcamp airport, and will be operational by mid-2019.

Mr Joyce said the location of the second facility was yet to be decided but would be announced in November, with the remaining eight locations including Mackay still in play.
