The woman who accused U.S. President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, of sexual assault wants her allegations to be investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation before she appears before a Senate committee considering his nomination, one of her lawyers said on Tuesday.

President Donald Trump says "we'll have to make a decision" if Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's sexual-assault accuser "makes a credible showing" before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Here's everything you need to know about the case.

She claims that an intoxicated Kavanaugh pinned her down during a party in Marlyand and attempted to remove her clothing.

Kavanaugh, 53, has denied the allegations, calling them "completely false".

"It seems to me this is in line with the way Dianne Feinstein has always behaved, very carefully, very circumspectly", Jeffe said.

The development came after Senate Republicans and Democrats fought over who should give evidence at the high-stakes hearing six weeks before major congressional elections.

Now, Ford is protesting that a hearing scheduled for next week would be too soon. She said she managed to escape once Kavanaugh's friend, identified as Mark Judge, jumped on top of them. While no sexual assault survivor should be subjected to such an ordeal, Dr. Ford wants to cooperate with the Committee and with law enforcement officials. Her family has relocated, they said.

Senate leaders, under pressure from fellow Republicans who wanted a fuller, open examination of the allegations, announced the move late on Monday.

How Trump reacted to the news?

One of Kavanaugh's friends was in the room and Kavanaugh covered her mouth to stop her from screaming, she said.

Donald Trump expresses sympathy for Supreme Court nominee accused of sex assault
The California based research psychologist claimed Mr Kavanaugh assaulted her in the early 1980s when she was at high school. When she testified before the Judiciary Committee, senators on both sides of the all-male panel questioned her credibility.

"I feel so badly for him that he's going through this, to be honest with you", Reuters quoted Trump as saying. This is not a man that deserves this, ' Trump told journalists. "If they don't have a moral code of their own to determine right from wrong, then that's a problem".

President Trump was asked on Tuesday whether he thought the Federal Bureau of Investigation should be involved. Should he order such a review, it would likely delay a confirmation vote until after the election.

McConnell, who is determined to deliver his second conservative Supreme Court justice in two years, now must navigate a treacherous pass.

Republicans control the Senate by only a narrow margin, meaning any defections could sink the nomination and deal a major setback to Trump, who has been engaged in a so-far successful effort since becoming president past year to move the Supreme Court and broader federal judiciary to the right. Were such a bar applied to virtually any Republican or Democrat in Congress, in all probability we would be looking at 535 vacancies.

"In fact, I have no memory of this alleged incident", Judge said in his statement to the committee. He called the allegations a "drive-by attack" on the judge's character. Asked if that included sworn testimony at a public hearing before senators, Katz told CBS' "This Morning" program: "She's willing to do what she needs to do".

Mike Braun, a former IN state legislator running against Donnelly, also criticised the timing and praised Kavanaugh.

Democratic senators had urged Grassley to invite Judge to testify.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, and Kevin de Leon, a Democrat in the California state Senate, rarely have much in common. Scaramella hopes that when Ford testifies, "we can believe that people who are victimized have real harm done to them".

Democratic committee members say their request to the FBI is not for a criminal investigation, but "appropriate follow-up" to the FBI's background investigation. Some, including Grassley, have questioned the fairness of making Kavanaugh withdraw his nomination for an assault that, if true, he would have committed at 17 (the other side contends that if the alleged assault occurred, no matter when it was, Kavanaugh shouldn't be appointed to a potentially lifetime position).

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley said the committee would hold a public hearing with Kavanaugh and his accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, next Monday.

"Compare that to the 22 witnesses at the 1991 Anita Hill hearing and it's impossible to take this process seriously", Feinstein said.
