They said there were likely three people in the vehicle "who were involved in a serious crime". Ferry routes, including connections with Helsingborg, Sweden, were also temporarily closed.

"The vehicle probably contains three persons linked to a serious crime", the statement said.

"We have found a vehicle that we believe is the right one", Copenhagen police spokesman Joergen Bergen Skov said.

Police armed with machine guns reportedly stopped a auto on a motorway west of the capital Copenhagen (which is located on the island, Zealand), according to a photographer quoted in newspaper Berlingske Tidende.

A traffic jam is seen after police closed the Oresund Bridge near Copenhagen. Shutting these major crossings has caused major traffic jams near the bridges to Sweden and to the mainland.
