She is in a critical but stable condition in hospital after being mauled on the thigh and suffering significant blood loss.

A water police vessel ferried the girl from the boat she was on to Whitsunday Island so she could be loaded into the waiting helicopter.

Surgeons are attempting to save Justine Barwick's leg and she may need to learn how to walk again.

The girl was air-lifted to hospital after being bitten on the leg while swimming in the Whitsundays in northeastern Australia, first responders said.

The girl was given pain relief and three pints of blood on the flight to hospital.

A 12-year-old New Zealand girl holidaying with her father and sister received a life-threatening wound to her leg yesterday.

Sea World marine services director Trevor Long told reporters that shark attacks, let alone two in 24 hours, were a "very unlucky and extremely unfortunate" in the "relatively safe" Whitsundays.

She will be flown to Brisbane Airport before being transported via ambulance to Lady Cilento.

Queensland Ambulance Service Rockhampton manager Mindy Thomas said they sent a helicopter from Mackay and a paramedic from Hamilton Island.

Ms Barwick has also been transferred to Brisbane and is in a stable condition in the intensive care unit at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.

Ms Barwick - who works for Family Based Care in north-west Burnie in northern Tasmania - was pulled out of the water and onto a nearby yacht, which happened to have a doctor on board.

Baited drum lines were being installed today to try to catch some of the sharks, and will stay the water over the weekend, to be re-evaulated next week, he said.

Fisheries Department spokesman Jeff Krause said that if a caught shark was deemed to be risky, with a history of attacking humans, it would be "humanely euthanised".

The charter company has notified its current customers against swimming to refrain from swimming in Cid Harbour and the broader Whitsundays "for the foreseeable future" and said it is working with relevant government agencies in relation to both incidents.

"I imagine (the victims) weren't able to be removed from the water straight away, which tells me the shark wasn't trying to consume them or carry out a prolonged attack", Dr Chapman told AAP.
