Russia announced on Monday it would send its advanced S-300 missile defense systems to Syria after it lost a spy plane to errant Syrian air defense fire - but the new set-up puts Israel at high risk of killing Russians and starting a war.

"The Russian side proceeds from the fact that the actions by the Israeli air force were the main reason for the tragedy", a statement said.

Syria's military previously owned a defence system that is less sophisticated from the S-300, but the long-range surface-to-air missile can spread across hundreds of kilometres and can be used to defend against aircraft and missile attacks and fire targets on the ground.

The decision to supply the S-300 technology was taken by President Putin because of the downing of the Russian aircraft, the defence minister said.

On Monday, Israel's Channel 2 reported that Netanyahu would attempt to persuade U.S. President Donald Trump to offer Russian President Vladimir Putin a "diplomatic initiative" in exchange for the latter refraining from delivering the S-300 system to Syria.

Because of this, Moscow claims that the Russian air force could not keep its plane safe. Russia laid the blame on Israel, accusing Israeli pilots of using the Russian plane as cover, an account denied by the Israeli military.

Russian Federation has said Syria shot the plane down shortly after Israeli jets struck targets in the area, but accused Israel of creating risky conditions by failing to give sufficient advance notice.

In short, Israeli strikes that require air defense suppression (such as blowing up Russian-made air defenses in Syria) will not stop any time soon, judging by Israel and Iran's ongoing positions. Earlier in the war, Russian Federation suspended a supply of S-300s, which Israel feared Syria could use against it.

USA stands to lose most in trade war with China
Trump also noted that he would continue to enact billions of dollars worth of tariffs on China until they changed. The ECB study simulates a 10 percent US tariff on all imports and an equivalent retaliation from other countries.

The move came in line with Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah's call for the "need to stop Israel's arrogance" while blasting the Jewish state's attack on the Syrian city of Latakia that destroyed an ammunition storage depot.

Much of Syria's air-defense network has been provided by Russian Federation but consists of weapons that are older and less effective than the S-300.

An Israeli official said the information showed that the Russian plane was shot down because Syrian batteries had "fired recklessly, irresponsibly and unprofessionally, long after our planes were no longer there". He also said that Russian Federation would start to electronically jam aircraft flying in to attack targets in Syria.

"We are convinced the implementation of these measures will cool "hotheads" and deter unreasonable actions that threaten our servicemen".

Some analysts doubted Russian Federation will actually transfer the S-300 to the government of President Bashar al-Assad, who has presided over more than seven-year-old civil war.

Mr Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "According to information from our military experts, this tragedy was caused by deliberate actions by Israeli pilots, which certainly can not but damage our relations".

So far Israel has enjoyed relative freedom of action in its air campaign in Syria, in part a result of the good relations Netanyahu has nurtured with Putin. "Russia needs to increase safety of its military and it should be clear for everyone", he said.
