A sense of history was palpable even before McCain's remains arrived inside the Capitol. Sen.

Raymond Celaya of Phoenix and others around him held the signs as they waited along a roadside.

The McCain family said about 15,000 people in all came to pay their respects at the Capitol.

John McCain credited his mother in one of his books with "the strengths she taught [him] by example". I'm a Democrat. And I love John McCain.

Michael Fellars was among those awaiting the motorcade outside the church. Firetrucks were positioned along the route.

Trump, who had been widely criticized for his muted response to McCain's death, insisted in an interview with Bloomberg News Thursday that he'd honored the senator appropriately.

John McCain's rebellious streak didn't come out of nowhere.

The former US presidents joked about McCain's imperfections, while saying he made them better leaders.

Part of the 8-mile (13-kilometer) route was lined with USA flags and campaign-style placards that simply read "McCain".

A two-term congressman and a senator for more than three decades, McCain shaped United States policy on everything from immigration to foreign policy, spoke out against the country's use of enhanced interrogation practices during the George W. Bush administration and irrevocably changed the very body in which he served. At McCain's request, two former presidents - Democrat Barack Obama and Republican George W. Bush - are expected to give eulogies. Fitzgerald was reportedly asked by Cindy McCain, wife of the late senator, a few months ago to speak at the service after a visit to the McCain ranch in Cornville, Arizona.

The Capitol was then opened to the public in the afternoon, allowing visitors to walk past the closed casket after waiting in line outside in temperatures that reached 104 degrees (40 Celsius).

On Thursday, Fitzgerald was among those who spoke at McCain's Phoenix-area memorial service, and he shared - with some jokes - how the two developed a mutual respect for each other despite obvious differences in their upbringing and appearance.

Smith says he'll always remember McCain for his commitment to the country.

The family service and the burial will be private and closed to the public and press.

A second memorial service will take place on Saturday at the Washington National Cathedral.
