Protest Matters: Senate Asks FBI to Investigate Kavanaugh After Flake Is Confronted by Sexual Assault Survivors

On Thursday, Trump wrote on Twitter that Kavanaugh provided "powerful, honest" testimony, adding that "the Senate must vote!" There are 51 Republicans, 47 Democrats and 2 independents who caucus with the Democrats.

Flake, a key moderate Republican, was at the center of Friday's drama and uncertainty.

The reversal is significant given Kavanaugh has repeatedly cited his Catholic faith and Jesuit education in defending himself against Ford's accusations.

- What is the allegation against Judge Kavanaugh?

Earlier in the day, the Senate Judiciary Committee formally asked the White House to tell the FBI to conduct a supplemental investigation into the allegations against Kavanaugh.

Swetnick says that while they were teenagers, she went to several parties during which teens were plied with drugs and alcohol and raped by a "train" of boys who would line up for the attacks. Still, the senator has not indicated if she intends to vote one way or the other. Instead, its investigators are expected to pursue the same kind of background inquiry they have conducted on Kavanaugh in the past, focused on the new allegations.

Grassley suggested in a tweet that a committee vote could be further delayed.

"I will be a governor who stands up for women, speaks out against sexual abuse and believes survivors who have the courage to share their stories", he said.

Flake is retiring at the end of this session and has frequently clashed with President Trump.

Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) are widely considered the most likely to reject Kavanaugh in the final vote. Once the White House gives Congress the FBI's report, lawmakers might decide to hold a hearing or change their vote.

Corker is another outgoing senator who has had his fair share of disagreements with Trump. The committee on Thursday heard emotional and sometimes combative testimony from both Kavanaugh and Ford.

David Gomez, a former FBI counterterrorism supervisor in Seattle, said typically FBI headquarters will divide up leads that get assigned to different field offices across the USA for further investigation and are assigned a quick deadline. Stormy Daniels, defeat a nondisclosure agreement President Donald Trump used to buy her silence on a sexual encounter he had with her during the 2016 presidential election.

Now that Kavanaugh's nomination has passed the Senate Judiciary Committee, it falls to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to hammer out whether or not to request that Flake's Federal Bureau of Investigation background check be reopened.

Investigators compile information about the nominee's past and then provide findings to the agency that requested the background check - in this case, the White House.

Pressure for Republican members of the senate judiciary committee are mounting as more and more people come forward, raising serious questions about Kavanaugh's fitness to sit on the supreme court. "Ms. Ford, there's no doubt in my mind there was some kind of trauma in her life".

Some other Republican governors and candidates for the office stopped short of calling for a full investigation.

"This is a very serious allegation, which should be thoroughly investigated, and it's up to the Senate Judiciary Committee to do just that", said Heitkamp last week.

While Kavanaugh denies the charge, some Democrats already are raising the prospect of impeachment if he's confirmed.

"When Dr. Ford's allegations against Judge Kavanaugh surfaced two weeks ago, I insisted that she be allowed testify before the committee moved to a vote".
