American actor Paul John Vasquez has died at the age of 48

TMZ was first to report the news, with sources close to Vasquez telling the publication that he died on Monday night from an apparent heart attack at his father's home in San Jose.

They were unable to revive the 48-year-old and pronounced him dead shortly after.

The actor played recurring roles on several hit series including How I Met Your Mother, ER, Justified, and CSI: NY.

The official cause of death is still under investigation.

According to his IMDB profile, Vasquez was born and raised in San Jose. Prior to that, his credits include various classic TV shows such as Simon & Simon and 21 Jump Street. He started acting in the 1980s and went on to produce a 2008 documentary called Quincy Coleman: It's All in the Song which was shown at multiple film festivals.

Vasquez was also set to star in the short Thug Alley as well as Spody Gets His Gunz, two projects which he wrote. He had three roles in pre-production of announced, including a role in the movie "Lone Wolf".

His former co-star Alan O'Neill died of alcohol intoxication in July, after being found by his girlfriend at her apartment in Los Angeles.
