Australia has arrested and charged a Sri Lankan man with planning a terror attack after finding "symbolic locations within Sydney" listed as possible targets in his notebook, police said at a press conference on August 31.

Mohammad Kamer Nilar Nizamdeen, 25, who works as a contracted business analyst at the University of NSW, was charged with one count of knowingly making a document connected to the preparation of a terrorist act.

The 25-year-old was charged with preparation, engagement, or assistance in a terror act.

"They are symbolic locations interior Sydney", Detective Acting Superintendent Mick Sheehy advised reporters on Friday.

A number of other electronic items were also seized during a raid at a unit at Zetland early Friday morning.

Now in Australia on a student visa, counter-terrorism investigators believed the man is also affiliated with the Islamic State group but at this stage he has not been charged with being a member.

He has returned to his native Sri Lanka and "other areas", although police refused to specify where exactly he had visited.

AFP detective superintendent Michael McTiernan said the charges were "serious and significant".

Police said there is no evidence to suggest there is a current or impending terror threat linked to Nizamdeen.

Spending four years at Xavier, West won three straight A-10 Player of the Year awards from 2001 to 2003. He was drafted in 2003 by the New Orleans Hornets with the No. 18 pick in the NBA Draft .

"At this stage there is a possibility of locations and folks named in that picture who're seemingly targets".

Mohamed Nizamdeen was arrested following an NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT) investigation. Nizamdeen did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.

After the notebook was found, police executed a search warrant at his home on Defries Avenue, Zetland, about 2am on Friday.

The university staffer was arrested at UNSW's Kensington campus, in Sydney's south east, about 2pm on Thursday.

"It is quite a significant document which requires further analysis", he said.

The JCTT is made up of officers from the Australian Federal Police, NSW Police, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, and the NSW Crime Commission.

It is believed authorities were alerted to the man, after a university employee handed Nizamdeen's notebook into police.

"Some material has been seized which will be used in evidence, I must say that it is documentary evidence; there is no suggestion of any capability possessed by this individual", Acting Superintendent Mike Sheehey said.

His matter is due before Central Local Court on October 24.
