States Prepare for ‘Storm of a Lifetime’ as Hurricane Florence Looms

The video, taken with a high-definition camera outside the International Space Station , shows a "stark and sobering view" of the Category 4 storm as it moves in a west-northwesterly direction across the Atlantic.

The storm was heading for the coast of North and SC but heavy rain was also expected in Virginia to the north and Georgia to the south.

"The state is mobilizing all available resources to ensure public safety", Deal said. "Storm surge watches are in effect in these areas - hurricane watches are in effect for coastal South Carolina, North Carolina". Heavy rains were forecast to extend into the Appalachians, affecting parts of Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia.

The NHC has issued Hurricane Warnings from South Santee River, South Carolina, to Duck, North Carolina.

It's unclear exactly how many people fled, but more than 1.7 million people in the Carolinas and Virginia were warned to clear out.

In Virginia, 245,000 coastal residents were ordered to evacuate. The game, like many others this weekend, was canceled due to the impending impact of Hurricane Florence.

Henry McMaster lifted the mandatory evacuation for Hurricane Florence in Beaufort, Jasper and Colleton counties Wednesday, Beaufort County schools will remain closed Wednesday.
