Democrat Beto O’Rourke attacks police as ‘the new Jim Crow’ just days after praising cops

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and his Democratic challenger, U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke of El Paso are holding their first debate Friday night in Dallas. That includes 94 percent of Cruz backers and 92 percent of O'Rourke backers. Re-election should have been easy for Cruz, but instead he is fending off a challenge from a social media-savvy Democrat who draws significant crowds. O'Rourke leads 97 - 3 percent among black voters and 54 - 45 percent among Hispanic voters.

So why such a big difference in these two polls?

This morning, Cook Political Report - a top independent analyst - shifted its rating of the contest to "toss up," a stunning blow to Cruz and Republicans after decades of GOP dominance in Texas. Meanwhile, O'Rourke continued on his campaign trail, speaking about issues afflicting Texans, such as limited access to health care, education, and civil rights violations (including the threat of dismantling Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals-an Obama-era policy that protects migrant individuals who were brought to the United States illegally as minors from deportation). The Texas GOP has also posted photos of O'Rourke's college punk rock band and his mug shot for a 1998 DWI on Twitter. Politico reported Friday that O'Rourke received over $9 million in online contributions in August.

The debate begins at 7 p.m. ET.
