Serena Williams takes on Karolina Pliskova in the US Open quarter-finals

Serena Williams overcame a slow start to beat Karolina Pliskova and progress into the US Open semi-finals.

The 36-year-old Williams, who is bidding for a record seventh title at Flushing Meadows as well her 24th major singles crown, started sluggishly in the night session at Arthur Ashe Stadium, allowing Pliskova to take a 3-1 lead in the opening set before rebounding to win 6-4, 6-3.

The six-time champion produced a glut of errors in the opening stages before composing herself to break back at 4-4 with some monstrous ground strokes. She clearly knows mine.

Pliskova broke back with Williams double faulting at 30-40 down.

While she gave up two straight games to Pliskova, and then narrowly dropped a third later on, Williams quickly finished her off to take the second set 6-3 and advance to the semis.

Pliskova held serve, but Williams served for the match in emphatic fashion for her first victory over a top 10 opponent since January 2017.

"I just play them instinctively, and that's how they work, or don't work sometimes."

"So obviously I know her game really well".

Seahawks safety Earl Thomas appears set to end holdout
Seattle had been thought wanting at least a second-round pick all along with it thought Dallas had not offered more than a third. Thomas' reaction to the lack of a resolution was clear in his post: "The disrespect has been noted and will not be forgotten".

She avenged a semi-final loss to Pliskova in the 2016 US Open and notched her first win over a top-10 player since she returned in March after the birth of daughter Olympia in September of a year ago. "She's just going for her shots".

She's the only player remaining in the draw to have won a major title and remarkably she has now won 14 of her 15 Grand Slam matches since returning from giving birth to her first child.

"When you don't play big points well, the match can get away from you", Stephens said.

The 28-year-old avenged last year's quarter-final loss to Stephens in NY, converting five of her eight break point chances.

World number one Nadal will seek to continue his US Open title defense, taking on Thiem for a place in the semi-finals. "But I don't play dropshots when I see the player struggling or bending over, no", Sevastova said.

However, having lost to Angelique Kerber in the Wimbledon final, there were question marks how she would fare against another high-calibre player.
