Working Apple-1 sold to unknown bidder at auction for $375,000

This Apple-1 is one of only 60-70 remaining of the original 200 that were designed and built by Jobs and Wozniak that originally sold for Dollars 666.66, the auction house said in a statement.

A working version of Apple's very first product, the Apple I computer, has been sold for $375,000 at an auction in Boston. Conceived by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, Apple-1 was created as a bare circuit board to be sold as a kit for electronics hobbyists at Palo Alto's Homebrew Computer Club.

It also came with its original cassette interface, power cables and manuals, and - unlike numerous surviving examples - had no modifications to its chip board, making it one of the best-preserved examples ever sold.

The owner held onto the Apple-1 all these years because he felt it could be a piece of computing history one day. It was equipped with a 1 MHz CPU and 4 KB of RAM, along with a cassette recorder interface which allowed users to load Apple Basic and store data.

This working Apple-1 was restored to its original state by a specialist in the field, Corey Cohen. The most remarkable aspect of this Apple-1 computer is that it is documented to be fully operational. And the keys to him first, not included.

Elsewhere the auction recorded strong results for historic autographs spanning more than two centuries, from George Washington to The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
