But the role of global warning in a specific storm such as Hurricane Florence or Typhoon Mangkhut is not so simple - at least not without detailed statistical and computer analyses. Officials said some 1.7 million people in the Carolinas and Virginia were warned to evacuate, but it was unclear how many did.

More than 60 people had to be pulled from a collapsing cinderblock motel.

In my two decades as a meteorologist, I can't recall a single storm that threatened new all-time records in all three of these, simultaneously, anywhere in the world.

On Saturday some residents tried to return to home, driving through flooded highways armed with chainsaws to clear fallen pine needle trees that covered the road.

That's just the number of customers without power in the Carolinas.

A 78-year-old man in Kinston, North Carolina, was electrocuted when he tried to connect two extension cords outside in the rain, according to Lenoir County Emergency Services Director Roger Dail. With half of the storm still out over the Atlantic, Florence continued to collect warm ocean water and dump it on land.

Florence made landfall 10 miles east of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, on Friday morning as a Category 1 hurricane with 90 mph winds.

But for many residents in the low-income communities most threatened by the storm's wake of devastation, evacuation was never a possibility.

A mother and baby were killed after a large tree fell on their home in Wilmington, while in Pender County a woman died of a heart attack after storm debris prevented paramedics from reaching her.

The storm known as Florence has created a slow-motion natural disaster for the Carolinas that could prove deceptively lethal as swollen rivers and streams spill over their banks and continue to rise. Newport, N.C., has already accumulated 23.7 inches.

However, in an update, an aide to the minister has insisted that the she has not resigned her position as earlier reported. The dual Nigerian and British national did not initially comment on the claims, leading to criticism from her opponents.

In Lumberton, North Carolina, volunteers are working to try to prevent a repeat of what happened with 2016's Hurricane Matthew, which left the city underwater for days.

The president sparked furor on Twitter this week when he claimed that the official death toll from Hurricane Maria was inflated by Democrats to harm him politically.

As Florence lingers over east SC, officials are keeping an eye on areas prone to flooding.

Heavy rains: Up to 18 trillion gallons (68 trillion liters) falling on seven states over seven days, as much water as there is the entire Chesapeake Bay.

North Carolina alone is forecast to get 9.6 trillion gallons (36 trillion liters), enough to cover the Tar Heel state to a depth of about 10 inches (25 centimeters).

More than 20,000 people were in 157 shelters in North Carolina, with almost 6,000 in SC shelters, officials said.

With the emergence of Florence, some place in the US has been drenched because of a stalled hurricane for four years in a row, storm surge expert Hal Needham said.

"WE ARE COMING TO GET YOU", the city tweeted around 2 a.m. Friday.

"Sooner or later we need to get out of there", Orrin H. Pilkey, a professor emeritus of geology at Duke University, told The Associated Press before the storm hit.

"The wind was so hard, the waters were so hard ... Houses. Trees", Holt said. She was eventually rescued by a boat crew; 140 more awaited assistance.
