Theresa May Stands with Israel: Warns No Excuse for Anti-Semitism or Boycotts

May was referring, at least in part, to Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party's months-long imbroglio over anti-Semitism among its members, which included a clamorous fight over the full or partial adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's (IHRA) examples of anti-Semitic behavior, which say that equating Zionism with racism is a form of anti-Semitism. "I do not underestimate the threat posed by those who promote antisemitism, or hatred in any form".

While she did not mention Corbyn by name, May said it "sickens" her to think that British Jews were seriously considering leaving the United Kingdom, a reference to a recent poll which found that almost 40 percent would consider emigrating from Britain if the Labour leader - who has faced criticism for a limp response to institutionalized anti-Semitism within his party as well as personal accusations of anti-Semitism - were elected premier.

"But I do not believe those voices speak for the vast, overwhelming majority of people in our country", she said.

"And criticizing the government of Israel is never - and can never be - an excuse for hatred against the Jewish people, any more than criticizing the British government would be an excuse for hatred against the British people". "We will not let them win".

In August, UK's former chief rabbi, Jonathan Sacks, called Corbyn an anti-Semite and revealed comments from 2013 said by Corbyn about Zionists, which were labeled as the "most offensive by a senior UK politician in half a century".

'There can never be any excuses for boycotts, divestment or sanctions: they are unacceptable and this government will have no truck with those who subscribe to them, ' she said.

May also promised to remain an outspoken ally of Israel.

The Prime Minister concluded by vowing that her government wanted to boost trade ties with Israel, "deepening our links in particular in sectors like agriculture, health, science, technology and innovation".

Some 32 Jewish groups ranging from Orthodox to Progressive Reform came together to sponsor Sunday's rally during a rainstorm in Britain's second-largest Jewish community.
