Here is how Shia Muslims in India mourns on Muharram.

Huge crowds came from all over the world to commemorate the slaying of Imam Hussain (RA), a grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This day marks the period of mourning for the community in the first month of the Islamic calendar.

The day also bears significance for some Sunni Muslims as Moses fasted on that day to express gratitude to God for liberating the Israelites from Egypt.

Imam Hussain was martyred along with members of his family during the Battle of Karbala that took place in 61 A.H.in modern-day Southern Iraq. "Most notable of which is the one marked by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, when mourners of Imam Hussein (as), the grandson of the Prophet (S), mostly clad in black, hold flags and banners to solemnly march in a funeral procession".

September 21, 2018-Friday is the day of Muharram/Ashura. Hussain was killed in battle 10 days later after he had refused to pledge allegiance to Yazid.

Hussein was decapitated and his head was taken to Damascus, the seat of the Ummayad dynasty to which Yazid belonged. Hussain's followers were those who believed that Ali, as Prophet's son in law, was his natural successor and his sons after him.

Shias men mourn the death of Imam Hussain Ali by working themselves into a frenzy and whipping themselves with sharp objects.

Mobile phone services are partially suspended every year in several cities as part of security arrangements for mourning processions on Muharram 10.

The chief Minister also urged the people to approach the tenth day of Muharram in a spirit of harmony and brotherhood.
