Tiger Woods Wins First Golf Tournament Since 4 Back Surgeries

Tiger Woods closed out his 80 PGA Tour victory and climaxed one of sport's most incredible comebacks at the Tour Championship in Atlanta today.

Tiger Woods claimed the PGA Tour Championship, more than five years after his previous tournament win, finishing off a historic comeback season. And, as it turned out, so had golf fans.

Woods has not won a major title since news of an extramarital affair that led to his divorce to ex-wife and Swedish model Elin Nordegren in 2010. A birdie and he'd jump into a three-way tie for fourth - as well as into a mountain of cash. Woods departed the 16th green having taken a bogey five, in itself a effect of an outstanding second chip.

He was denied a bigger lead after bogeys on the ninth and 16th holes.

"It was just a grind out there", the former world No. 1 told NBC moments after his final putt. He finished three clear of Billy Horschel and had galleries in their thousands, and millions watching worldwide, following his every move.

Before the final round at the PGA Tour championship in Atlanta, Tiger Woods had won 14 major championships and won 79 times on the PGA Tour.

It's good to have Tiger back in the win column and also, to all who said Tiger would never be any good again, where are you?

Beaming as he was presented with a trophy after the win, Woods said, "It started hitting me that I was going to win the tournament, and I started to tear up a bit" - and that caused the crowd behind him to go wild.

"I was beyond playing". Woods holds a three-shot lead over Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy heading into Sunday's final round.

"I kept saying 'Hey, I could still play this out of bounds.' But once I got the ball on the green I gave (caddie) Joey (LaCava) a high five because I knew it was done". But on Sunday, nearly everything felt different, even as Woods regained a big piece of his past.

"This is a spot I'd much rather be in than certainly four or five back".

Wood's last victory was in 2013 at the Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. "Out of 40 majors can he win five of them, I don't know?"

"I was having a hard time not crying on that last hole", Woods said.

Woods is still two wins short of Sam Sneads' record of 82 PGA titles and five wins away from surpassing 18-time major victor Jack Nicklaus.

He fired a 62 earlier this month and has also done enough to force himself into the U.S. team for next week's Ryder Cup.

Even President Trump noticed that Woods was playing well.

Overnight leader Rose remains in the hunt but will look to improve on Sunday after a two-under-par 68.

A Saturday 65 for Woods was the lowest in the 30-man field.
