Total announces major gas discovery off Shetland

The discovery, on the Glendronach prospect, could deliver about one trillion cubic feet of recoverable resources.

Located on Block 206/04a to the west of the Shetlands, in water depth of about 300 meters and in a formation below the Edradour reservoir, Total said the discovery can be developed quickly using the existing infrastructure around the Edradour field and the Laggan-Tormore facilities that deliver gas to the company's Shetland Gas Plant.

Total's Arnaud Breuillac said the discovery could be commercialised by using the current Laggan-Tormore infrastructure.

Total has a 60% stake in Glendronach, with Ineos and SSE holding 20% each.

MSP Scott added: "The offshore work will be important too for Lerwick Port Authority and the Shetland supply industry".

Total said the discovery will extend the life of the West of Shetland infrastructure and production hub which includes the Laggan, Tormore, Edradour & Glenlivet fields, as well as the Shetland Gas plant, all of which contribute to about 7 percent of the United Kingdom gas consumption.

"We'll soon be releasing our revised Yet-to-Find estimates for the prospective resources across the UKCS and these will highlight that the Atlantic Margin ranks highly in terms of hydrocarbon volume potential".

Total's production in the United Kingdom comes mainly from fields located offshore in three major zones - the Alwyn/Dunbar area in the Northern North Sea, the Elgin/Franklin area in the Central North Sea and the Laggan-Tormore hub in the West of Shetland area.
