Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota confirmed on Wednesday that it is recalling around 1.03 million hybrid models due to a wiring issue that could pose a fire risk. According to the report, the recall was first announced in Japan, but Toyota said it would expand that recall to cover vehicles around the globe.

In a release, the company said the subject vehicles have a problem with the engine wire harness, connected to the hybrid vehicle Power Control Unit.

The recall covers certain versions of the hybrid produced in Japan between June 2015 and May 2018.

If this occurs, it could cause an electrical short circuit which would lead to a surge in heat and risk firm, said the vehicle firm.

In 2016, Toyota had announced the recall of around 2.87 million Prius due to fuel tank leakage and another 1.43 million - a lot of them Prius - for non-Takata airbags.

A recall in the United Kingdom is expected to follow as there are a total of 209,000 European models potentially affected. Any particulate accumulated on those parts could wear down the wiring's insulation as the vehicle vibrates, which will eventually wear down the insulation and expose bare wire. There has been one reported case of a vehicle emitting smoke, but no injuries were reported, he said Wednesday. This could cause an electrical short circuit, which could generate heat and lead to a risk of fire, Toyota said.

"Customer safety is our upmost priority and we will be contacting all vehicle owners that are affected advising them of this recall". "If a wire core is exposed, the engine wire harness assembly will be replaced with a new one that includes a protective sleeve".
