Travel chaos reported as hundreds of trains pulled across south England

South western train strike south west arriva cancel delay

Rail passengers at two train operators are suffering travel disruption because of strikes in the long-running dispute over the role of guards.

The dispute, dating back more than a year, centres on plans by Northern owner Arriva Rail North to introduce more driver-only trains.

A spokesman said extra capacity had been laid on for passengers travelling to the Bournemouth Air Festival, as well as between Salisbury and Yeovil.

Read on for details of the trains that will be running on Saturday.

On Saturday, Northern expects to run around 30 per cent of services, while planned cancellations will affect a "small minority" of routes on Sunday.

More than 1,900 South West services have been axed today due to the walkout while hundreds of trains also face delays and disruption during three days of action.

Sunday is the quietest day of the week with about 1,200 trains timetabled - but half of those will not run.

This includes the Alton to Waterloo line via Farnham, where SWR has confirmed a reduced service will be in operation on Friday, with one train per hour running in each direction.

Thankfully, Jackson called back. "He has a voice that sounds like someone doing a Michael Jackson bit", he explained. "We really did have him", Groening told The Weekly . "You don't have to put it in quotes", he said.

He said SWR had treated the union with "utter contempt" by appointing negotiators with no authority to reach a settlement.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union will walk out Saturday, September 1, 8 15, 22 and 29 following the failure of talks.

The Government's preferred measure of inflation, the CPI, rose to 2.5 per cent in July from 2.4 per cent in June.

"It's time for both these companies to get out of the bunker and start talking with the union on the issue of the guard guarantee".

The RMT, however, fears the company is putting "private profit before public safety" with staff also affected.

The cost of most train fares are set by train companies themselves, but 40 per cent of fares in England, Scotland and Wales are regulated, so that they are only allowed to rise by an amount pegged to the RPI rate of inflation in July the previous year - now 3.2 per cent.

These regulated fares include annual season tickets.
