Tropical Storm Gordon: Where it's headed and the North Texas impact

Tropical depression may form in the Gulf of Mexico this week

On Monday, the Hurricane Center upgraded the tropical storm watch to a tropical warning along the northern Gulf coast from the Alabama/Florida state line, westward to Morgan City, Louisiana, including Lake Pontchartrain.

A hurricane warning was put into effect for the mouth of the Pearl River in MS to the Alabama-Florida border. But it is moving quickly to the west-northwest at 17 miles per hour. Hurricane Florence was some 2,400 miles (3,900 kilometers) away from the US, and lining up behind it, another potential storm was likely to form not far off the coast of Africa.

A Tropical Storm Gordon Twitter account even cropped up on Monday, personifying the terror so many people felt.

The then-tropical storm made landfall around 10 p.m. and brought with it heavy rains and strong winds.

Tropical Storm Gordon is expected to develop by Monday night.

The National Hurricane Center will be sending a plane to investigate Gordon Monday afternoon, hoping to use that data to refine future forecasts on the projected track and strength of the season's seventh named storm.

As the storm crossed Florida's southern tip on Monday morning, officials closed the beaches in Miami-Dade County and warned of possible street flooding.

Gordon's winds and rain come just two weeks after Monroe County began a $49.2 million project to remove tons of debris left by Hurricane Irma past year in canals in the Keys.

Packing winds of 65 miles per hour, the storm is just 9 miles per hour from hurricane-strength, which it is predicted to attain before coming ashore.

To make matters worse, the National Hurricane Center is warning Gulf Coast residents to watch for a "life-threatening" storm surge. Sea-surface temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico are warm enough to support a tropical cyclone but may not be high enough for a storm to quickly strengthen.

The child died when a tree fell on top of a mobile home in Pensacola as Gordon whipped the region with tropical storm-force winds and heavy downpours, a spokeswoman with the Escambia County Sheriff's Office said.

A storm surge warning is also in effect for Shell Beach eastward to Dauphin Island, Alabama. The storm was expected to reach coastal Mississippi and Louisiana by late Tuesday and move inland over the lower Mississippi Valley on Wednesday.

By evening, the storm was headed west-northwest at 17 miles per hour into the Gulf of Mexico and has maximum winds of 60 miles per hour.

"The combination of a unsafe storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline", the NHC forecast warns.
