Trump boasts of response to deadly Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico

-On Tuesday, as states along the Southern and Mid-Atlantic coast braced for the arrival of Hurricane Florence, President Trump was asked about the lessons the government learned from the response to Hurricane Maria, which devastated Puerto Rico previous year, killing almost 3,000 people and causing $100 billion in damage. "We're as ready as anybody has ever been", Trump said.

Trump on Tuesday praised his administration's response to Puerto Rico, calling it an "incredible, unsung success". "That is the complete opposite of 'success'".

"Now is not the time to pass judgement; it is time to channel every effort to improve the lives of over 3 million Americans in Puerto Rico", he added. And the problem with Puerto Rico is their electric grid and their electric-generating plant was dead before the storms ever hit. That is not a success.

This time - as Hurricane Florence and a series of other storms barrel toward the US - the Department of Homeland Security division charged with responding to disasters says it's prepared even as the agency defends its 2017 response. More than half of the workforce - 54 percent - that FEMA sent to Puerto Rico lacked proper training. "Texas we've been given A-pluses for".

U.S. marking 17th anniversary of 9/11 attacks
Donald Trump has been branded insensitive after greeting supporters with a double fist-pump ahead of a 9/11 memorial. He also recognized the 5.5 million Americans that he said had enlisted in the armed services since the attacks.

As far as Trump's response is concerned, the most lasting image of his involvement with Hurricane Maria will be the time he visited Puerto Rico and threw rolls of paper towels to survivors.

The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority was under bankruptcy protection and some parts of the island that lost power during Hurricane Irma hadn't had electricity restored before Maria hit.

As many as 1,800 deaths are attributed to Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans.

In Puerto Rico, where the estimated death toll from Hurricane Maria has ranged from as low as 64 to as high as 5,000, the accountability office said the agency's poor response was compounded by a failure to deploy enough qualified staff.
