Hurricane Florence made landfall as a Category 1 storm at 7:15 am (1115 GMT) in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, after stalking the Carolina coast for days.

The storm is a Category 1 with 75 miles per hour winds and higher gusts. But with a storm surge putting pressure on water to head back inland and heavy rains swelling those rivers, widespread flooding is the result.

Over 770,000 were without power in North Carolina Friday night.

Officials said some 1.7 million people in the Carolinas and Virginia were warned to evacuate, but it's unclear how many did.

Duke said it has 20,000 workers, including workers from utilities in other states and Canada, ready to restore power when it is safe to do so.

Forecasters say it is now moving into eastern SC, crawling along at just 3mph (4.8km/h).

The White House said on Friday that President Donald Trump would travel to the region next week unless his trip would disrupt clean-up and rescue efforts.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend up to 175 miles from the center of the storm.

In the besieged city of New Bern, rescuers had plucked more than 200 people from rising waters by midmorning, but about 150 more had to wait as conditions worsened and a storm surge reached 10 feet, officials said.

"It's an uninvited brute who doesn't want to leave", said North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper.

The company has reportedly been working with parts suppliers since early this year. One analyst said the commercial appeal of foldable displays was unclear.

"We know we're in for a long haul here", Cooper said of predictions that the storm will linger all weekend - and force a tough recovery for.

Tom Balance, owner of a seafood restaurant in New Bern, had decided against evacuating his home and was soon alarmed to see waves coming off the Neuse and the water getting higher and higher.

The No. 1 mission right now, Cooper said, is to save lives.

In Jacksonville, North Carolina, city officials posted photos * a href="https://www.facebook.com/JacksonvilleNC.gov/?tn-str=k*F" target="_blank" rel="noopener" *of toppled gas pumps and a downed trees early Friday, warning residents to take shelter and avoid roadways.

"Rescue workers are working in risky conditions that will only get worse today", said Cooper, who called the storm a "1,000-year rain event" for parts of southeastern North Carolina. The Wilmington airport had a wind gust clocked at 105 miles per hour (169 kph), the highest since Hurricane Helene in 1958, the weather service said.

Nearly 20,000 people had taken refuge in 157 emergency shelters, Mr Cooper said.

Winds of up to 110km/h are also expected for several days as the weather system slowly grinds over.

Many thousand more power customers were without electricity in northeastern South Carolina Friday night.

North Carolina Army National Guard soldiers were sent to a home along the 100 block of El Nora Lane in Otway, North Carolina, on Friday in reference to two deaths there.
