Virgil Van Dijk injury: Dutch defender forced off against Southampton

Jurgen Klopp defends Mohamed Salah after poor run of form

Nobody has been able to stop Jurgen Klopp's side and after their tense victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the final minutes of their Champions League opener in midweek, they brushed Southampton aside with a 3-0 win.

Liverpool meanwhile had plenty of chances to increase their lead - sub James Milner had two very good shots in quick succession before Salah thought he had his second of the afternoon, only to be flagged for offside.

The Reds were two up inside 21 minutes and made the result safe as early as half time when Mohamed Salah ended a four-game scoring drought on the stroke of the break.

Since the start of last season 12 of Liverpool's 21 home games (57%) have had over 2.5 goals and that's off-putting when it comes to goals-related bets.

After the game, Klopp talked up the 29-year-old's display.

"On the defensive side the last two games were outstanding, ideal from him".

"It was not easy, to be honest. It doesn't make sense to me".

"It's just good to have him; the free-kick was outstanding".

"It's not cool, but should not be too serious".

'Gary McAllister was the assistant to Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool and I told him I hope you're going to come and take Virgil but Brendand didn't fancy him and didn't think he was better than what he already had. He said: 'I couldn't shout anymore, ' so that's obviously 60 percent less of his level. "I didn't hear anything different".

The last Southampton player to score a Premier League goal against Liverpool is Sadio Mane.

Van Dijk was seen on the bench later in the second half rather than in the dressing room receiving treatment.

More impressive, it's another cleansheet for the team.

The Reds put three goals past Southampton at Anfield to earn a seventh win from seven games in all competitions and return to the top of the table. Despite initial claims from the Swiss playmaker, his dead ball didn't cross the line and it was definitely Salah's goal. "I am really sure we are mature enough to understand it".
