Blasts at Damascus air base after possible missile strike

Blasts at Damascus air base after possible missile strike

The reported strike came as senior USA officials from the State Department were in Israel to discuss Syria with Jerusalem officials.

Anti-government sources claimed that Israel had launched missile attacks from the Golan Heights on Mezzeh.

"It left two pro-regime fighters dead and wounded another 11, some of them in critical condition", said Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman.

He could not specify their nationalities or whether they belonged to militias or regime forces.

Syria has denied reports that a series of blasts at a military airport near Damascus on Sunday were from Israeli air strikes, state media say.

According to unnamed officials and intelligence sources cited by multiple media outlets, the air base was the target of an airstrike or missile attack, and Syrian air defenses responded. Some reports suggested that there had been three explosions, targeting a research center in Jamraya near Damascus and a military depot, which suffered a direct hit.

The statement of the Syrian army comes less than an hour after at least two explosions were heard at the Mazzeh airbase in the Mazzeh neighborhood west of Damascus.

Israel has previously acknowledged having carried out air strikes in Syria aimed at degrading the capacity of Iran and its allies, including Lebanon's Shi'ite Hezbollah group, which are backing Assad in the country's seven-year civil war.

Earlier this week, Israel reiterated its threat to hit Iranian military targets in Syria.

Syria denied an attack had taken place, saying, 'No attack.

More than seven years since the conflict began, regime forces have managed to retake entire regions from rebels and militants, and now control almost two-thirds of the country.
