Many assumed that he was referring to President Donald Trump, who was pointedly not invited to the service. It is the last event in Washington, where McCain lived and worked for over 40 years, and part of McCain's five-day, cross-country funeral procession.

McCain has been honored in a number of services and ceremonies since he passed away last Saturday, Aug. 25.

The president did not attend Saturday's service after being told he would not be welcome at services both in Arizona and Washington, as well as the private burial service tomorrow in Annapolis, Maryland at the US Naval Academy where Mr McCain graduated in 1958.

Trump was noticeably absent from the memorial service which had several high-profile attendees including former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. After the ceremony, McCain was to be laid to rest next to his Naval Academy classmate and friend Admiral Charles Larson.
