Whitewash! Europe sweep foursomes to stun United States and lead 5-3

The hosts trailed 3-1 after the opening fourballs, but the second session saw an unlikely comeback as the leaderboard lit up blue.

They suffered a 4-0 reverse in the format en route to defeat in Hazeltine two years ago, but the nature of the victories will have sent European captain Thomas Bjorn off into the evening feeling confident that the momentum is now strongly on his side. You have to think emotionally what he put into his comeback to this season, the amount of golf he played leading up, trying to make the Ryder Cup Team, trying to, basically, nearly win the FedExCup.

This week it's been key and uncharacteristic mistakes that have plagued Tiger, like a pulled tee shot into the water at the ninth hole during his morning match and a wedge to the 13th that also wound up wet.

Europe whitewashed the United States in the foursomes to turn the tie on its head, and after watching McIlroy bounce back alongside Ian Poulter to beat Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson 4&2, he has total confidence in the Co Down man's ability to reset and "go again" today.

"What they have done is pretty remarkable", Bjorn said.

A late wobble allowed the Americans to close to within one, but a fired-up Garcia drained a 20-foot birdie putt on 17 to seal victory and become the second highest points scorer in Ryder Cup history with 24.5 - second only to Nick Faldo (25).

"Just keep going. Keep going hard, keep going with what we've got, and you know, I've seen too many times what the singles does".

There have been two previous instances of teams erasing four-point deficits on Sunday, the U.S. famously snatching victory at Brookline in 1999 before Europe returned the favour in the "Miracle of Medinah" six years ago. I would never get ahead of myself in this.

It'll be Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson vs. Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka; Garcia and Alex Noren vs. Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson; Molinari (who won Woods's tournament this summer and held him off in the British Open) and Fleetwood vs. Woods and Bryson DeChambeau and Ian Poulter and McIlroy vs. Spieth and Thomas.

Ian Poulter and Jon Rahm were the only Europeans to be down, with Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth one-up through 11.

How Day One of the Ryder Cup panned out
Ian Poulter and Jon Rahm were the only Europeans to be down, with Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth one-up through 11. British Open champion Molinari, as he did in the win over Woods and Reed, made the winning putt.

McIlroy and Poulter were not in top form for this match-up but they started to cut loose in the closing stages. With four birdies over their last five holes, they won 4 and 3.

There have been more than a few murmurings that Spieth had grown exhausted of Reed, that they didn't get along. We go again tomorrow.

"I don't know if there is any one match more important than the other", USA captain Jim Furyk said.

McIlroy's response after making a tricky 10-footer to make a half on the 3rd was to turn around 180 degrees to face the crowd before bellowing at them "Who am I?"

Play began on Friday morning and ends on Sunday.

"Everything feels pretty good".

"We ran against two guys that were both playing well and when one was out of the hole, especially in best-ball, the other one made birdie and vice versa".

Nope, this 10-6 deficit heading into Sunday's 12 singles matches is on the collective group, and not just for their largely uninspired play.

Furyk said he didn't think there was anything physically wrong with Woods.
