Wilfried Zaha: Manchester United 'hell' left me 'fighting my demons by myself'

Zaha faced the daunting prospect of attempting to break into a United team that featured Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Robin van Persie and Nani, and he described feeling isolated from the squad due to the living arrangements the club made for him.

"I was fighting my demons by myself, these rumours that I knew weren't true".

"I do generally, we've all got a duty of care for the game to try and improve the game to try and make it better and better", he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha has admitted that he suffered with depression while at Manchester United, describing his time there as "hell".

Benitez added that he was confident match referee Andre Marriner would treat Zaha the same as he would any other player despite the Ivory Coast international's criticism.

"I went through so much with United, with England".

He continued: "I was dealing with this at 19 - living in Manchester by myself, nowhere near anyone else, because the club had a hold over where I lived".

Benitez has previously suggested that he will not consider any new deal until January, instead preferring to focus on improving Newcastle's poor start to the season.

The 25-year-old, who played for England at youth level and won one senior cap but now represents Ivory Coast, has rebuilt his career at Selhurst Park, where he has scored three goals in four appearances this season and signed a new five-year contract last month.

Palace host Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday and the Magpies boss took exception to Zaha's suggestion he is not protected by officials.

"I am pretty certain we did that, like we do every game, but there has been no specific contact with either the Premier League or Mike Riley and his people, I see no reason for that".

His redemption at club level has come with worldwide recognition after he opted to represent Ivory Coast over England.

Recently, Watford's Etienne Capoue somehow avoided being sent off when he stood on Zaha's Achilles in a potential season-ending injury. I like the city, I like the atmosphere and the fans and everything.

"He's a good player, no doubt about that, but I think the FA have to deal with his comments", said Benitez.
