With bated breath, United Nations awaits another first for Trump

United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday accused Iran of spreading chaos and China of meddling in U.S. elections at a UN Security Council meeting that laid bare divisions between the United States and other world powers.

Questioning the effect the decision taken by Mr Trump in May to pull out of the JCPOA, the official name of the Iran nuclear deal, had on Iran, Mr Macron rejected the sanctions issued against Tehran by the U.S. adminstration in August.

Since withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal, the US has reimposed sanctions on the regime, and Trump is urging reluctant partners to do the same.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani responded to Trump's fiery speech by calling the reimposed sanctions "economic terrorism" and claiming the United States was plotting to overthrow Tehran's regime.

Trump's policies have been divisive, to say the least.

The president took a more serious tone when discussing Iranian leadership, accusing the regime of fueling and financing the humanitarian crisis in Syria. Russian Federation and China will be represented by their foreign ministers, Sergei Lavrov and Wang Yi.

Trump said in his luncheon toast that "the United Nations has this incredible potential to bring people together".

Now TMZ reports that after the messages the two of the exchanged numbers via DM, got on the phone and settled their differences over the weekend.

"Until such time that we keep reaping the benefits of that agreement for our nation and people, we shall remain in the agreement", he said.

It will be only the third time in United Nations history that a US president will chair a Security Council meeting.

"We do hope with all the law-abiding and multilateral-oriented countries that we can ultimately put this behind us in an easier fashion than it was earlier anticipated", Rouhani said.

"We did not and will not interfere in any country´s domestic affairs". But Wednesday's spectacle was nonetheless striking, as it involved worldwide leaders confronting the United States commander in chief in person with the world watching. "We refuse to accept any unwarranted accusations against China", said Wang.

The moment only reinforced Trump's isolation among allies and foes alike, as his nationalistic policies have created rifts with erstwhile partners and cast doubt in some circles about the reliability of American commitments around the world.

Trump held an unprecedented summit with Kim in Singapore in June that yielded a broad pledge by Kim to "work toward" denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula. Thank you very much, ' he said. His continued barbs at former president Barack Obama continue to come back to haunt him.
