YouTube Gaming goes web-only from March, as Google kills standalone app

On that page, you'll find a list of the top live games (something that's nearly certain to be dominated by Fortnite for the foreseeable future), along with recent videos and current live streams from your subscriptions. In my case, it's all Fortnite, all the time. The company said there are "tens of thousands of different game pages" for titles big and small on the platform.

The differences between the two aren't that noticeable.

The landing page will also highlight content from newer "On the Rise" channels. If I were to be really picky when it comes to the design, I'd say it's less Twitch-lite and more YouTube, but it's otherwise not that noticeable of a difference. By shifting to the main website, YouTube is hoping that these gaming-specific features, such as easy access to live streams, popular videos, and recommendations, will be viewed more by the general public.

"The problem is, if you didn't have the app, or you weren't using the gaming hub to kind of like discover this content, creators weren't as discoverable".

YouTube Gaming Finds New Home on Main Site

The retirement of the YouTube Gaming app is likely a move by Google to better compete with rival services like Amazon-owned Twitch. Don't be sad, though, as YouTube plans to focus its entire gaming effort into the regular YouTube app and web experience. It's bringing those features over to the main site along with the rest of Gaming.

Once you visit the site, you'll see personalized recommendations at the top. Whether they were Let's Plays of games that were out of our reach, guides on how to complete quests or boss battles, or lore videos that dove deep into a game's story, YouTube was the place to find it all. Ironically, Twitch is now returning the favor by trying to poach YouTube stars with special contracts.

YouTube Gaming will now also work hard to promote up and coming content creators and streamers, something it's previous app was failing at.
