Ryanair shares news Airline signs crucial agreement with Portuguese pilots

Ryanair said yesterday that it had reached an agreement in a dispute with British, Portuguese and Italian pilots as it sought to end a damaging series of strikes.

In Germany, where discussions with the unions of pilots and cabin staff had still not been resolved, an agreement is possible, "probably in the next three weeks", however, stated during a press conference in Berlin Wednesday, the ceo of Ryanair Michael O'leary.

Ryanair added that it had signed similar agreements earlier in the week, with United Kingdom pilot's union BALPA and ANPAC in Italy, to cover all of the airline's directly employed pilots in those two countries.

Ryanair says in a press release and have signed this week an agreement with the trade union of pilots SPAC in Portugal, Balpa in the Uk and ANPAC in Italy, providing for better working conditions and especially the negotiation of a collective agreement. "We have a joint proposal that will go to consultation with members, until the members vote there is no agreement".

The Dublin-based carrier said on October 19 that it signed similar agreements with British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA) and Italian pilots union ANPAC covering all of Ryanair's directly employed United Kingdom and Italian pilots and added that following negotiations in Madrid this week it expects to sign a recognition agreement with Spanish pilot union SEPLA shortly.

Macedonia’s Parliament Approves Change in Country’s Name
Greece's objections forced the United Nations to refer to the new country as "the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia". Since Yugoslavia's dissolution in the early 1990s, Macedonia is having arguments with Greece concerning its name.

Ryanair later added that the agreement was signed by the Ryanair BALPA pilots' council.

"The recent wave of airline failures in Europe including Primera Air, Cobalt, Air Azur, and Small Planet (GER), as well as base closures/cuts announced by many of Europe's major airlines in response to higher oil prices and lower air fares, have given a significant stimulus to these union negotiations over recent weeks".

In July, meanwhile, strikes by cockpit and cabin crew disrupted 600 flights in Belgium, Ireland, Italy, Portugal and Spain, affecting 100,000 travelers.

An update on its earnings outlook and past performance is due on Monday when Ryanair publishes half-year results.
