"I jumped over the back seat, over her auto seat, holding my body over hers", Simpson told ABC.

I've learnt my lesson today, NEVER drive in a hail storm!

Once the rain started they pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road to wait out the wild weather, but Fiona said conditions worsened rapidly.

Simpson said she went into shock and her whole body felt numb when paramedics arrived, the Australian news site reported.

The hail lashed the woman's body, leaving cuts and bruises across her face and back.

"I couldn't see in front of me, I couldn't even see the line on the road" She said the next thing she heard was a large bang."All this rain starts coming in, and the back window where my daughter was was just open ... it's gone", she said.GRAPHIC WARNING: "This story contains confronting images" It was so scary but there was no time to be afraid ...

"We parked at the side of the [road] when the storm got too heavy and the hail blew out our windows", Simpson wrote on Facebook.

Simpson told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation she pulled over and thought to wait out the storm.

Fiona Simpson, a 23-year-old Australian woman from Queensland's Kingaroy town, went into full-blown mommy mode on Thursday as she threw herself on top of her four-month-old daughter to shield her from hail that was pouring through her busted auto windows. "I pulled over because it was just way too unsafe".

According to UH, AFM is a rare condition that attacks the nervous system, specifically the spinal cord, and can cause paralysis. Officials at Children's Mercy Hospital said two cases of Acute Flaccid Myelitis , or AFM, have been confirmed at the hospital.

Simpson's daughter suffered bumps to her head, and her grandmother spent the night in hospital after the hailstones "shredded" her skin. "It kept getting heavier and heavier", Fiona recalled. "It blew out the back window where my daughter was sitting in the auto seat, so I got out of my seat and covered the vehicle seat". Fiona Simpson was caught in the middle of it.

The tornado first struck Tansey, a small town around 250km to the north of Brisbane, at 3pm yesterday.

Thankfully, nobody has been killed in the extreme weather.

Many farmers in the region were close to harvesting when the storm hit.

Tansey resident, Greg Hellmuth, told Nine News the sound of the tornado was "unbelievable".

"We ran inside and everything was going sideways, all the trees were going sideways, this roof went up (in the air) and down".

"It could have been a lot worse, that's for sure", Simpson told broadcaster 9News.

Downpours will continue to pelt the area from Friday until at least Monday accompanied by strong southeasterly winds.
