A PERSON is missing from a remote community in East Arnhem Land with unconfirmed reports they may have been attacked by a crocodile.

Police said it was not yet clear what type of crocodile had taken the woman.

The body of an indigenous women was recovered by Australian police Friday (Oct 12) following a reported crocodile attack in a remote part of the country's north.

The group, which was comprised of about seven women and children noticed she was missing when they heard a commotion, and realised her bucket was floating in the water.

Police found her body about 5pm less than a mile from the scene. Local wildlife rangers killed the crocodile.

"NT WorkSafe has been notified that a female Aboriginal Ranger has been taken by a crocodile approximately 206km south west of Yirrkala", a statement from the government organisation read".

"There's been no confirmation that there's been a croc attack", she said.

The incident occurred on the Gan Gan outstation where Yirralka Rangers work in the Laynhapuy Indigenous Protected Area.

A recent study by researchers at the National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre, Royal Darwin Hospital and Menzies School of Health into water-related deaths in the region, found deaths from crocodile attacks have increased dramatically since culling ended in 1971.
