BPL 2019: AB de Villiers signs up with Rangpur Riders

Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers has signed up for the upcoming sixth edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

De Villiers forms part of a mouthwatering Riders batting lineup that includes big-hitting West Indian legend Chris Gayle, who has a phenomenal T20 strike rate of 148.29. He will join a team which has the likes of Gayle (a return to the Royal Challengers Bangalore days) and England basher Alex Hales. Reports emerged of the former South African captain making an global comeback prior to the World Cup next year but de Villiers squashed any such reports.

There was interest shown in players from Associates nations too, with Sylhet roping in Nepal legspinner Sandeep Lamichhane and Khulna signing US fast bowler Ali Khan, who impressed in the CPL this year. Like IPL every Franchise is limited to fielding a maximum of four overseas players in their playing XI.

Earlier this week, the Sylhet Sixers signed David Warner and Sandeep Lamichhane for the upcoming edition. In the draft, the A+ category (USD 200,000) will include Shahid Afridi, Imran Tahir and Evin Lewis, while category A (USD 150,000) will include Mohammad Hafeez, Faheem Ashraf, Thisara Perera, Lasith Malinga and Darren Bravo.

De Villiers, who called time on his global career in May saying he was "tired", will turn out for the BPL's defending champions in the tournament which will run from January 5 to February 18, 2019.
