Cameron Champ secures maiden PGA Tour win

Conners mixed five birdies with a sole blemish during the final round

Conners mixed five birdies with a sole blemish during the final round

Cameron Champ collected his first PGA Tour title with a four-stroke triumph at the Sanderson Farms Championship in MS on Sunday.

However, Champ responded superbly with four birdies in succession from the 13th, the last with a putt from 35 feet.

Champ outlasted Canada's Corey Conners, who got married last weekend and almost won his first PGA title but settled for his best tour result, shooting 68 to finish on 271.

"All the hard work over the years, all the sacrifices my family has made for me to be able to have this opportunity. now a PGA Tour victor, it's just unreal", said the 23-year-old from California. He made a 38-foot birdie putt on the par-4 16th that gave him a two-shot lead and saved par on No. 17 with a 15-footer.

"It means everything", Champ said after a final round 68 in which he was forced to use a spare driver after cracking his regular club shortly before teeing off. "The front side was a little bit of nerves. On the back side I brought it all together and finished strong".

But a final line of 16/29 for 220 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions and a passer rating of 102.7 is pretty good. That running ability remains an asset, especially while he's struggling with his accuracy, especially on deep balls.

Conners birdied the par-4 second from 11 feet and the par-5 third from six feet to tighten the gap, then concluded the front nine with a 13-foot birdie putt to grab a share of the lead as the back nine began. Shaky bogeys on the seventh and eighth holes combined with birdies from Corey Conners made it appear Champ's first time in contention on tour would have to be merely a learning experience.

For Champ, the week started with an impressive 7-under 65, and he improved on that in Round 3 with an 8-under 64.

Indeed Conners looked set to tie for the lead at the par-four 15th, only to miss a seven-foot eagle putt after driving the green. No surprise: He made the putt for yet another birdie.

Conners also had nine birdies against a lone bogey to stand second with Americans Shawn Stefani and D.J. Trahan another stroke adrift and Scotland's Martin Laird sharing fifth alongside American Sam Burns.
