‘Maneuvered to prevent collision’: Chinese destroyer chases USS Decatur in South China Sea

The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Decatur had to maneuver to avoid a collision on Sunday after a Chinese warship came within 45 yards of its bow as the American ship transited a disputed island chain in the South China Sea on Sunday, U.S. defense officials said.

US media outlets reported a statement from the US Defense Department describing "increasingly aggressive" maneuvers conducted by a China ship which engaged in a literal game of chicken with a US ship.

A Chinese destroyer almost collided with a United States warship in the disputed South China Sea after making what the Americans described as an "unsafe and unprofessional" manoeuvre in an attempt to warn it to leave the area.

The operation was the latest attempt to counter what Washington sees as Beijing's efforts to limit freedom of navigation in the strategic waters, where Chinese, Japanese and some Southeast Asian navies operate.

"U.S. Navy ships and aircraft operate throughout the Indo-Pacific routinely, including in the South China Sea", Gordon said.

The ministry said China has irrefutable sovereignty over the South China Sea islands and the waters around them, and the situation there is progressing well thanks to the hard work of China and countries in Southeast Asia.

"China's military is resolutely opposed to this", it said.

Nobody will forget, though, for future Ryder Cups that when everyone else fell on their own sword, Reed did not. He came into these matches with a sterling 4-1-2 record alongside partner Jordan Spieth in two Ryder Cups .

China frequently challenges USA ships and aircraft passing through parts of the South China Sea, sometimes with radio warnings, but at other times by using harassing maneuvers.

USS Decatur had sailed within 12 nautical miles of Gaven and Johnson Reefs in the Spratly Islands when it was approached by the Chinese destroyer.

China has demanded the USA cancel its sale to Taiwan of $330 million in parts for US -made F-16 fighters and other military aircraft used by the island nation, which mainland China regards as a renegade province.

Military tensions between the USA and China have ratcheted up in recent weeks for a number of reasons.

China has not yet commented on the matter.

On Monday it emerged that Beijing had called off security talks planned for October between US Secretary of Defence James Mattis and Chinese Defence Minister Wei Fenghe.
