The major quake's epicenter was 125 kilometers (75 miles) east of the town of Kimbe, according to USGS, which said it struck at a depth of around 40 km.

A magnitude 7.0 quake has hit Papua New Guinea, the US Geological Service reports.

Hazardous tsunami waves from the quake were possible within 300 km of the epicenter along Papua New Guinea coastlines, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

He said there was no damage in the town, but officers had not yet been able to contact villages closer to the epicentre.

He was unable to comment on the tsunami threat.

The National Weather Service's office in Honolulu tweeted that "a tsunami threat exists for parts of Pacific located closer to the quake, but it is too early to determine whether there is a tsunami threat to Hawaii". Australia's Tsunami Warning Centre said its coastlines were not at risk.

Fifty reported killed in "catastrophic" Kenya bus crash
In December 2017, as many as 36 people had died in a head-on collision between a bus and a lorry on a highway in central Kenya. Kenya has struggled to reduce the rising number of road accidents as more people in the growing middle class acquire vehicles.

A magnitude 6.0 natural disaster has struck just off the coast of Indonesia, a country reeling from an quake and tsunami last month that killed more than 2000 people.

Two smaller tremors struck the region immediately before and after the main quake.

In March, a magnitude-6.6 quake struck nearby with no casualties or damage reported.

Papua New Guinea is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, the most seismically active region in the world, where 90 percent of the world's earthquakes occur.

Some tourists and residents ducked outdoors as a precaution but then went back to sleep when there was no tsunami warning.
