Major Controversy During Red Sox-Astros Game Tonight

The Red Sox were up by two in the bottom of the first when Astros second baseman Jose Altuve sent a rocket deep into right for what looked like a home run.

"[West] just said there was fan interference on the field and my argument was the trajectory was there, the ball was leaving the yard", Astros manager A.J. Hinch said in a TBS interview.

That would have been an INSANE catch from Mookie Betts.

Replays appeared to show that Betts' left arm extended over the wall and into the sea of fans.

The rule further states that "no interference shall be allowed when a fielder reaches over a fence, railing, rope or into a stand to catch a ball". If those are the rules Major League Baseball shouldn't let fans sit there.

After the umpires' final call was made, Minute Maid Park was filled with boos. If the Astros lose, their fans will likely blame that first-inning play.

But campaign spokesman Steve Sandberg called the ad a "disgraceful act" in a statement to the Star-Ledger in New Jersey. For the New Jersey senator, the race represents the latest in a series of dramatic fights for his political life.

Everyone else is pretty confused, too.

The question at play with Betts is whether he reached over the fence, or whether the fans reached over the fence.

MLB's official explanation is that replay officials were unable to find conclusive evidence to overturn the call on the field - specifically, they couldn't determine if the spectator reached over the fence into the field of play - and therefore stayed with the original decision, as relayed by Joe Sherman of the New York Post. If he didn't, and the ball was over the fence when it was touched, and the contact was incidental between the fan and Mookie Betts' glove, that has to be a home run, right?

It was a great attempt of a catch by Betts, but it seems like a confusing ruling by the umpires.

So the runner went back to first base, Altuve returned to the dugout, and the Red Sox held onto their early 2-0 lead.
