A good guy with a gun may have saved lives Saturday night during a shooting in Birmingham, Ala.

A masked gunman who had brandished a firearm and opened fire inside an Alabama McDonald's was shot dead by a father who was leaving the restaurant with his sons. The masked gunman allegedly burst inside "as the door was opened...and opened fire". When it was over, the dad, the gunman and one of the two sons had been shot, according to WIAT. No other injuries were reported.

"Earlier we had such a spirit of celebration in the city because of the events going on and now families are having to deal with the tragedy of loved ones who are hurt or killed". "The gentleman who unfortunately lost his life, the teenage boy who is in the hospital recovering from his injuries and the father who is also recovering from his injuries", Shelton said, according to WVTM.

"Right now it appears the victim made a decision that cost his life and the father made a decision that preserved his and (his) children's' life", Shelton told

McDonald's employee Markus Washington told WBRC that he and another worker hid in a freezer when the shooting started. "He's looking for us", he said. Washington added he was thankful the armed customer was there.

"I'm feeling grateful", he told the station.

Police said the father will not be facing any charges.
