Trump Unsure If Defense Chief Jim Mattis Will Step Down: 'He's Sort Of A Democrat'

"I would put my money on General Mattis every day of the week and twice on Sunday, in terms of knowing more about military policy, theory, and doctrine".

On mocking Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's accuser Christine Blasey Ford at a MS rally, the President said: "I'm not going to get into it, because we won".

Asked if that meant he was not a registered member of either major political party, he replied, "I've never registered for any political party".

Mattis told reporters traveling with him to Vietnam that he had not spoken to the president since the interview, nor has he seen it, and is only going by what he's seen in the press. Mr Mattis said he had not.

"I'm on his team".

"Of course, I don't think about leaving", Mr Mattis told Pentagon reporters last month.

"We just continue doing our job", Mattis added.

The US has been conducting regular patrols in the South China Sea to assert freedom of navigation in the area where Beijing has built up and militarised numerous islands and reefs it controls in the region.

Mattis's fate has been the subject of intense speculation for months.

"But General Mattis is a good guy", said Trump. "They'll come into the administration", Trump said. Mr Trump then expressed his full support for Mr Mattis, and suggested Mr Mattis should let the press know this.

60 Minutes' Lesley Stahl was thought by many Republicans to be rude because she interrupted the President so many times.

Last week, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley announced she would be joining the growing list of departed Trump officials at the end of the year.

Last month, Mattis appeared to be caught off-guard by statements from National Security Advisor John Bolton that the estimated 2,000 US troops in Syria would not be withdrawn until Iranian forces and Iranian-allied militias also left the country. Just a year earlier, Trump had mocked Kim as "Little Rocket Man" while Kim returned the insult, calling the president a "mentally deranged USA dotard".

Mattis also disagreed with Trump's decision to halt large-scale joint military exercises with South Korea as the US has tried to engage directly with North Korea to convince Kim Jong Un to halt its nuclear program. "We'd have taken an altogether different stance had that been considered".

Mattis has strongly denied making any such remarks.

Mattis had been scheduled to visit China as part of the trip, but that plan was changed as trade and defense disputes intensified between Washington and Beijing.

"All right, I'll get in another fight with you", Stahl said, again attempting to change subjects.
