With a race to spare Mick Schumacher, son of seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael, has won the Formula 3 title.

Schumacher, 19, finished second behind Estonian Juri Vips on Sunday (NZ time) on the Hockenheim circuit in the season's penultimate race.

Notching up eight wins including a memorable sweep at the Nurburgring, Schumacher only had to prevent dropping 15 points to his title rival Ticktum in the final race on Saturday, having failed to score in the opening race due to a collision early on in.

The duo have previously exchanged heated words with Ticktum questioning the quick rise of Schumacher midway through the year, but the latter had the last comment on Saturday as he was confirmed as champion.

The German had finished 12th in the first race of the day following an early crash but made the podium in the second to succeed 2017 champion Lando Norris, who will drive for McLaren in F1 next season. However, a move into F1 racing next season has been ruled out.

Victory at the half-way stage heralded a remarkable run when Schumacher finished on the podium in nine of the next 12 races.

Hurricane Michael's death toll rises after five killed in Virginia
While we might not get more storms in a warmer climate, most studies show storms will get stronger and produce more rain. Rick Scott tweeted Saturday that millions of meals and gallons of water are on the way to the affected communities.

The German was undoubtedly the standout driver of the second half of the season.

The 49-year-old has not been seen in public since as he recovers from his injuries at the family home in Switzerland.

Schumacher scored his maiden win at Oschersleben for the Van Amersfoort Racing team, but eventually finished tenth overall after only two podium places.

Schumacher's title comes a year after he placed 12th overall in his debut F3 season.

With the spotlight permanently on young Schumacher, he was fiercely guarded from reporters' questions by Sabine Kehm, his father's manager.

This season, he has been a revelation for Prema Theodore Racing, sparking speculation that he will race in Formula Two next season - or step straight up to F1.
