In April, Mexican immigration officials had some success in dispersing a smaller caravan by processing many who chose to seek refugee status in Mexico, but some did continue on to the us border. Some hope to eventually enter the United States to escape violence and poverty.

Frustrated by Congress' failure to fully fund his proposed wall at the border with Mexico, Trump in April ordered National Guard personnel to help secure the border in four southwestern US states. Obrador is scheduled to take office on December 1, 2018.

"We will address every case", he said. "It's very important to have a relationship of friendship". They got as far as a closed metal gate where two military jeeps were parked and Guatemalan police in riot gear looked on silently. The rest would have to apply for refugee status or face deportation.

"One way or another, the way Mexico treats the undocumented immigrants from Central America affects Mexico's position in how it can criticize the US government for its treatment of undocumented Mexican immigrants in the United States", Salazar told CNN en Español.

The U.S. -Mexico border between Tijuana and San Diego is the world's busiest land border crossing.

If the country failed to do so, he would proceed to close the border with Mexico, Mr Trump claimed.

The countdown is on for the arrival of what has come to be known as the "Honduran caravan" - an estimated 4,000 men, women, children and infants who left the troubled Honduran city of Pedro Sula last weekend on foot and by truck. Hopefully Mexico will stop this onslaught at their Northern Border. The nearest border is about 110 miles (177 km) away.

The president attacked US Democrats - accusing them of encouraging illegal migration - as well as Central American leaders and the migrants themselves, referring in a tweet to "criminal elements and drugs pouring in".

Three weeks before US midterm elections, Trump has seized on the caravan as a political victor for Republicans.

"The challenge related to security for our southern border is. a challenge for American sovereignty", he said. It was at that time that President Trump deployed National Guard troops along the border and threatened to rip up the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA.

But government statements, Twitter posts and even a police blockade haven't succeeded in stopping the caravan.

A Border Patrol official who was not authorized to speak publicly tells CBS News that agents at the border "are swamped", with more and more large groups crossing together.
