Maple Leafs' Auston Matthews out minimum four weeks

Auston Matthews will be out for at least four weeks because of a left shoulder injury sustained Saturday. The center was cutting in front of the net with the puck, but as he attempted to shoot, he found himself on the receiving end of a shoulder-to-shoulder hit from Winnipeg defenseman Jacob Trouba.

"It's frustrating. There's not much you can do", Matthews said after the team's morning skate on Monday.

The young center now sits second in the league in goals with 10 and is tied for sixth in points with 16. He began the year with a six-game goal streak and a seven-game multi-point streak to lead the Leafs offensive attack.

Based on a minimum four-week timeline, Matthews will miss at least 13 games, with his earliest possible return date being the Boston Bruins' visit Toronto on November 26.

We've learnt many lessons", he said. "Both within the playing group and within the organisation itself to move things forward". The report may fuel calls for the three players' suspensions to be reduced, Australian media reported.

Matthews, who has been dogged by shoulder injuries, missed 20 games a year ago due to a couple of ailments, including 10 games between February 22 and March 22 with a sore right shoulder.

Due to his now prolonged absence, the Leafs have had to shuffle the lines in order to compensate for the loss off their star centreman.

With Matthews on the shelf, No. 3 centre Nazem Kadri has been reunited with wingers Mitch Marner and Patrick Marleau - a trio that had plenty of success in the second half of last season. Par Lindholm will move back to the middle on a third line with Connor Brown and Andreas Johnsson. The rest of the lineup, including the defensive units, remains unchanged for now. The Marlies call-up has yet to be announced. Players such as Trevor Moore and Chris Mueller appear to be the most likely candidates should Toronto pursue this option.
