Israel steps up armored deployment near Gaza

Palestinian protesters gather in the smoke billowing from burning tires as Israeli forces launch tear gas canisters at the Gaza fence, east of Gaza city, on October 12, 2018.

Israeli soldiers first sent a surveillance drone to take a look at the unsafe airmail, before a sharpshooter popped enough of the balloons to send the bomb dropping harmlessly into an empty field.

For the thirtieth Friday in a row, thousands of Palestinians protested along the Israeli border with Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed "very strong action" if such attacks, as well border unrest, continued, and some Israeli politicians called for an extensive military operation in Gaza.

Just Saturday morning, new attempts were made by Palestinian youths to breach the border in central Gaza.

Hamas and the smaller Islamic Jihad militant group quickly denied firing the rockets. "It is a reality", Mladenov told the council.

"The situation is delicate".

"Palestinian factions are demanding an end to the Israeli blockade that strangled life and business in Gaza", the official told Reuters.

The large Israeli military deployment on Friday came a day after Nickolay Mladenov, the United Nations envoy for the Middle East, said "we remain on the brink of another potentially devastating conflict, a conflict that nobody claims to want, but a conflict that needs much more than just words to prevent".

More than 200 Palestinians have been killed and some 21,500 others wounded in renewed Gaza clashes, according to the latest figures released by the Gaza Health Ministry.

The implication of an intensified response from Israeli soldiers, and even a full-blown military conflict, concerned Higazi, who pointed out that "the three armed conflicts between Israel and Hamas have had catastrophic consequences for the population of Gaza, which continues to suffer from 11 years of living under a brutal blockade".

For decades, Israel has been in conflict with the Palestinians, who have been seeking diplomatic recognition for their independent state on the territories of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, which are partially occupied by Israel, and the Gaza Strip.
