The United States and Riyadh have had a strategic relationship dating back to 1932, and have recently been allied in countering Iranian influence in the Middle East.

Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen called the Saudi statement a cover-up. But some USA lawmakers expressed doubt about the Saudi explanation.
