Skinner, whose father Peter is from Ayr, has been on Scotland's radar but Townsend said he had no qualms about the fact he took his time over the summer to make up his mind.

"We believe the rugby they're playing now they can bring to worldwide level and will help us be a better team".

"He wanted to start the season and earn his place and he's done that".

"We've known about him for a few years, his Scottish qualification".

The third is Glasgow centre Sam Johnson, a former Australian schoolboy global who played Super Rugby with the Queensland Reds before moving to Scotland, and qualifies on residency grounds, having joined the Warriors three years ago.

Scotland have been boosted by the return of key players for their November internationals, including Jonny Gray, Greig Laidlaw, Finn Russell and Tommy Seymour. He's an excellent player. Scarlets will actually play Edinburgh at Murrayfield the night before the Cardiff game, which will be contested for the Doddie Weir Cup to aid the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation, the campaign to raise funds to research Motor Neurone Disease which afflicts the popular former Scotland and Lions lock.

The Autumn Tests mark the start of World Cup preparations in earnest, with nine games coming up playing numerous top ten teams in the world, but it's about firming out the work already done rather than outright experimentation.

"So it's great to see him fit and playing number eight for the Hurricanes and playing very well for the Scarlets". I don't think he believed he'd be selected in a squad and he's delighted he has been announced in it.

Scotland go into the games against Wales, Fiji, Australia and Argentina missing key personnel with full-back Stuart Hogg and forwards Zander Fagerson, John Barclay and Richie Gray all unavailable.
