Steven Gerrard watched his Rangers side draw 1-1 with Aberdeen on opening day

Steven Gerrard has warned his Rangers players they will be replaced if they do not respond to their Scottish League Cup semi-final defeat to Aberdeen.

The Light Blues have had a rather patchy record recently, with Steven Gerrard's side enjoying themselves in European competition, although their domestic football has not always been the best.

Lewis Ferguson headed in a corner 11 minutes from time to book Aberdeen's place in the final, where they will meet Celtic.

Fans were disappointed with the overall performance from their side, however, one man's display, in particular, annoyed plenty of them on social media.

In the absence of Morelos and Lafferty Gerrard gambled on handing Nigerian under-23 global Umar Sadiq his first start.

'We're Rangers, we are a big team and we should play with a centre forward, ' added Gerrard.

Some showboating in midfield led Everton to win the ball and launch the attack that led to their spot kick. Ademola Lookman prepared to come on around the hour mark, coming on to replace Bernard in the 62nd minute.

Speaking to Rangers TV, Gerrard said when asked if his visit with Liverpool pushed him to take the job: "No". "It's Aberdeen's day, we wish them well".

"To be fair to Umar in the last two or three weeks he's shown signs and improvements", Gerrard added. I pick the players, I sign the players, I pick the game plan so I'll take responsibility for this. By the end of September, the player's application remained well below par, to judge by Gerrard's observation: "He's going to have to improve everything - it's not rocket science".

"It's a new team so for a lot of the boys this is their first defeat at Hampden", he said.

"It is one we have to address on Wednesday and we have got to create as many chances as we can and put goals in the back of the net".

Gerrard was named Rangers manager in May this year and has since helped the side qualify for the Europa League group stages, and make the semi-final of the League Cup.
