Robots to build robots in new $150mn facility… destruction of human race draws near

ABB Group, the Swiss industrial conglomerate, announced on Saturday that it will invest $150 million in Shanghai, to build its latest robotics factory under the theme of robots make robots.

The factory, located near ABB's China robotics campus, is due to be operating by the end of 2020 and is to produce robots for China, as well as for export elsewhere in Asia.

The Zurich-based firm also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Shanghai municipal government to collaborate in the fields of industry, energy, transportation and infrastructure so that the eastern city can speed up its high-tech development. The Shanghai plant, located in the Kangqiao area, will be the company's single largest robotics facility around the world, producing the full range of ABB's products from small payload robots to large ones that can lift an entire auto, according to Spiesshofer.

ABB will invest USD150 million to set up the plant in Kangqiao district, the global Chief Executive Ulrich Spiesshofer said to Yicai Global on October 27.

Tourists stuck as floods hit Venice
Speaking on Monday, Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said a series of underwater barriers would have prevented the rising water levels. Yesterday marathon runners were forced to wade through ankle-deep water in Venice after high tides flooded the city yesterday.

"The concept behind this factory and is the same advice we give our customers every day: Invest in automation solutions that provide flexibility and agility to grow in whichever direction the market goes", Sami Atiya, president of ABB's Robotics and Motion division, said. This will allow production to adapt and scale efficiently to changes in China's robot market without additional capacity expansions. The concept behind our new factory is to make the smartest and most flexible use of every meter of production.

ABB, whose industrial robots are used, among other things, to build automobiles as well as to assemble electronic devices, will build robots for numerous industries at the Shanghai factory, a spokesman told Reuters. "That comes from combining agile automation solutions with the great capabilities of our people". The company aims to automate the entire robot manufacturing procedure. In addition, the new plant will expand the types and varieties of robots, which the company can build for Chinese companies, including automakers and electronics manufacturers.

The Shanghai-based factory will form part of ABB's global robotics supply system alongside upgraded sites in Sweden, as well as Michigan, USA. ABB operates in more than 100 countries with approximately 147,000 employees.
